NEVADA'S BILLION DOLLAR BABY

LAS VEGAS, Nv. - For the first time since the inception of the Nevada Film Office (NFO), total recorded revenues for filming in Nevada have surpassed one billion dollars. Lieutenant Governor Lorraine T. Hunt, Chair of the Commission on Economic Development (CED) which oversees the Film Office, announced 2001 NFO calendar year totals for film, television, commercial and other multimedia production of $134.9 million. This total is more than $10 million greater than calendar year 2000, bringing the grand total to approximately $1.125 billion for revenues recorded by the NFO.

"I am pleased to say this continues the record-breaking trend the Nevada Film Office has been setting for three years in a row," said the Lieutenant Governor. "It is especially gratifying when we realize this growth in Nevada filming took place in spite of two threatened industry strikes that caused production to practically grind to a halt as of the first of June."

Television production of all kinds, including series, specials and documentaries, represented the highest portion of revenues, with over $76 million and 57% of the total. Feature films were second in revenues generated, at approximately $35 million and 26% of production. The remaining 17% of production activity accounted for $23 million and was comprised of: Commercials, $10 million; Photography, $7 million; Music Videos, $4 million; Corporate/Industrials and miscellaneous, $2 million.

The Nevada Film Office has participated in highly visible film events, such as the Independent Feature Film Market in New York City and Chicago, the American Film Institute (AFI) in Los Angeles, the annual Locations and ShowBiz Conferences in California, and film festivals that offer the opportunity to solicit filmmakers in person. At these events, the NFO proactively courts productions, writers and directors that may not be aware of all this state has to offer. "We strive to attract a broad spectrum of genres in film, television and other multimedia projects," says Charles Geocaris, Director of the Nevada Film Office. " We pursue that goal through many aggressive avenues of promotion and marketing for Nevada filmmaking."

Nevada's Billion Robin Holabird, Deputy Director of the NFO who oversees the northern end of the state in the Reno/Tahoe office, adds, "Statewide, we certainly want every possible project that has to do with gaming, neon, glitz and glamour, but we're also pursuing anything that can be shot anywhere else in Nevada. That includes westerns and sci-fi, family and relationship dramas and comedies, and much more."

The NFO publishes the annual Nevada Production Directory of service providers and crew throughout the state, and it is highly sought after. The book is selectively distributed to thousands of professionals in the fields of film, television, photography and other production industries, many of whom are on a waiting list in eager anticipation of the new issues. The 2002\ book is due for release later in January 2002, and it is reiterated online at http://www.nevadafilm.com where it is continually updated throughout the year. According to the Lieutenant Governor, "The NFO's ad campaigns, trade show participation, sales calls on studio and production executives, extensive mailings and marketing, location scouts, familiarization tours, thousands of photographic images provided from their files, and a staff dedicated to problem-solving and resource-finding have all combined to help produce these phenomenal results."

Director Geocaris adds, "We also commend and acknowledge the extraordinary intergovernmental efforts between the State Film Office, Clark County, the City of Las Vegas, Metropolitan Police, the Nevada DOT and many other entities and municipalities throughout southern and northern Nevada. It is an exceptional team, and it makes all the difference in achieving true 'film-friendly' success in Nevada."
