The 21st Year of the NFO’s Screenwriting Competition Launches in May

LAS VEGAS, Nv. – Lieutenant Governor Brian K. Krolicki announced today that the 21st year of the Nevada Film Office’s (NFO) Screenwriting Competition begins May 1st.

“This is the oldest state-sponsored screenwriting competition in the country and it draws great talent from all over the world,” said Krolicki, who serves as Chair of the Nevada Commission on Economic Development, which oversees the NFO. “The purpose of the contest is to aid writers in developing their talents and to encourage filmmaking in Nevada,” he said.

Anywhere from dry lake beds to mountain peaks and the Strip can be used, as long as 75 percent of the script’s locations are filmable in Nevada. Only unsold feature length scripts will be accepted and they must be in standard industry format. The entry fees per script are $15 for Nevada residents and $30 for nonresidents and writers may enter multiple screenplays. The competition is international and open to writers of all experience levels.

Detailed analysis, script consultations from screenwriting professionals and exposure in the industry are a few of the benefits writers can expect from the contest. The NFO will also send copies of the winning script to agents and production companies in Los Angeles willing to read it for consideration of future projects.

“We are excited to be able to help writers get their foot in the door of what is a very competitive industry,” said Charles Geocaris, Director of the Nevada Film Office.

Each script must be accompanied by a submission release form which can be found on the NFO’s website. The deadline is Aug. 1, 2008.
