Location Spotlight: Hard Luck Mine Castle

In 1998, Randy Johnston purchased 40 acres of land in Esmeralda County, Nevada. In the year 2000, he began building his own 8,000 square foot castle, the Hard Luck Mine Castle.

The Hard Luck Mine Castle is named after the Hard Luck Mine, which was in operation from 1897 to around World War II, but after the war, the mine was never reopened. The 40 acres that Randy purchased includes the Hard Luck Mine.

The Hard Luck Mine Castle is Randy’s dream house. He designed and built nearly everything himself, although he did have a few friends help for some of the heavier construction work. Over the years, it’s been a work in progress as Randy kept adding on new features to the property.

It now stands 4 stories tall with 22 rooms including four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two kitchens, two pipe organs, a wine cellar, an electrical room, a media room, and more. It also features a spiral staircase and spiral balconies. The castle is completely self-contained and off the grid, powered by wind and solar.

If you are looking for a unique filming location with custom architectural design and construction, you’ll find it here in this one-of-a-kind private fortress.
