Located within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area in Blue Diamond, NV, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is a 520 acre oasis preserving the historic Sandstone Ranch. Established in 1876, Sandstone Ranch was initially a working farm that later became a retreat. A few famous owners included comedian Chester Lauck, German actress Vera Krupp, and millionaire Howard Hughes. Currently, the park is owned by the Nevada Division of State Parks.

Some of the oldest buildings in Nevada are located at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, including a blacksmith’s shop from the 1860s and the Sandstone Cabin, which was home to the founding family. Other historic sites include the main ranch house, a workshop, the Wilson family cemetary, a barn and corral, a chinchilla shed, and more. Some buildings are open without restriction while others are closed to the public.

With an approximate elevation of 3,800 feet (about 2,000 feet higher than central Las Vegas), Spring Mountain Ranch offers a diverse array of higher elevation wildlife, such as rock squirrel, badgers, mule deer, and bighorn sheep.

Other features of the park include five loop trails, guided tours as well as historical reenactments and demonstrations of early settlers and their pioneering skills, a reservoir known as Lake Harriet (home to the endangered Pahrump poolfish), and the Super Summer Theatre, which is an outdoor venue for plays and musicals with a beautiful mountainous backdrop.

Fallout: New Vegas

Set in the year 2281 in a post-apocalyptic open world environment, Fallout: New Vegas is the fourth major installment of the Fallout game series. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park was the inspiration for a location in the role-playing video game Fallout: New Vegas.
