Also known as “The Pick of Nevada,” Tonopah Brewing Company is a restaurant and on-site microbrewery located in the small mining town of Tonopah, Nevada, approximately three hours from Las Vegas and three hours from Reno. The owners, Fred and Nancy Cline, are dedicated to the growth and development of Tonopah for a very special reason: Nancy’s relatives were among the town’s earliest settlers. The Clines opened Tonopah Brewing Co. to pay homage to the first business established in Tonopah, which was a brewery and tap house called Wieland Brewery.
When Tonopah was first founded, beer was the drink of choice for the early European-born immigrant miners, particularly because the water quality was poor at the time. The hand-crafted beers served by Tonopah Brewing Co.’s brewmaster Lance Jergensen are reminiscent of the same flavors originally served to Tonopah’s miners and use locally grown or sourced ingredients. The regular beer offerings include the Half Life (Hefeweizen), 49251 (American Pale Ale), .999 (Indian Pale Ale), Mucker (Irish Red Ale), and Frail Sister (Pilsner), which are all references to Tonopah or Nevada.
The establishment’s custom-made brewhouse is from Bavaria, Germany and features four 310-gallon fermentation tanks, four 310-gallon lagering tanks, and two 310-gallon copper storage kettles. The brewhouse system permits decoction and step infusion, which allows the beers to get created in a traditional fashion.
