What Are Aerial Lifts / Cherry Pickers?
In film and television, cherry pickers are a type of aerial work platform often used to suspend large lights 30 to 120 feet high above sets.
Cherry pickers are known by many other names, such as:
- Condors
- Elevated work platforms
- Boom lifts
- Man lifts
- Basket cranes
- Hydraladders
Cherry pickers can be mounted on the back of a truck, flat bed, paneled van, standalone trailer or self-moving platform. They can be powered via batteries or with a diesel engine.
It is extremely important to hire someone with experience rigging lights. Every single piece of equipment that will be mounted to an aerial lift must be weighed to ensure that the platform can hold the weight safely.
There will be some cherry pickers with a large enough platform and a safety railing that can hold the extra weight of a crew member who can operate the lights. However, other aerial lifts have very small platforms and lights must be controlled from the ground.
