What Does Back-to-Back Film Production Mean?

Back-to-back film production refers to filming two or more movies as one production that will be edited and released as multiple films, a practice commonly seen in trilogies. For example, if the first movie does well, the production company may green-light a second and third film at the same time and shoot them back-to-back.

This practice offers productions many time-saving and cost-saving benefits, such as eliminating the need to rebuild sets. Productions are also able to secure much of the same crew, talent, and locations needed before scheduling conflicts can occur due to other projects.

Fun Fact: ‘Superman’ and ‘Superman II’ were filmed simultaneously in 1977. ‘Superman’ was also partially filmed in Nevada. Click here to learn where!

Filming productions back-to-back also helps maintain viewer interest in the series as well as minimize signs of aging in stars for storylines that don’t have large gaps of time written into the story. This is an especially important consideration for younger actors whose voices may change quickly as they mature.
