What Is the Purpose of Close Up Shots in Film?
A close up shot can be used for many different reasons. The first can be for providing viewers with informational details that are otherwise difficult to see unless the image is zoomed in. An example would be a close up shot of a letter that a character is reading that contains important information that viewers need to know.
Another reason that a close up may be used is to convey and intensify a character’s emotional reaction to a situation they are going through. A close up shot of a character feeling a moment of sadness or terror, for example, creates an intimate experience with viewers who often times cannot help but feel the same emotions as they are exposed to every detail that is expressed on the character’s face.
Close ups can also be used for humor and comedy by purposely hiding details of a scene that evoke a shocking reaction from other characters, and then revealing the silly or embarrassing details in a close up.
