What Is A Dialect Coach and What Role Do They Play In Helping Actors Learn Different Accents for Movies?

A dialect coach is an important person to have on a production set if the film or television production requires specific accents or unique verbal ways of expressing a character’s background. Dialect coaches help actors hone in on their voice and speech control to help create the design of their character’s speaking patterns in a way that effectively communicates the character’s personality traits, upbringing, education, work experience, and cultural travels.

Dialect coaches often research specific dialects and speech patterns for the production, prepare training materials, and provide practice sessions with actors. Some dialect coaches have additional training in vocal coaching for singing, and they help singers work on achieving the proper tone and articulation when singing in a second language.
