In early television news reporting, film footage typically was not available until at least an hour after an event was recorded due to the process it needed to undergo in order to be viewed and edited for broadcasting. This included chemical processing as well as manual cutting and splicing.

In the 1970s and 1980s, electronic news gathering, or ENG, was created to help reduce the delay between recording and broadcasting through the use of portable video cameras, recorders and wireless microphones.

As video technology got better and the reliance on film diminished, the editing process also improved, allowing news stations the ability to broadcast live reports of events using live microwave and satellite trucks.

ENG allowed for even greater use of outside broadcasts, in which the editing and transmission of news stories are conducted on-location from a mobile production unit.

Keeping Current with Broadcast Technology

The National Association of Broadcasters produces an annual trade show called the NAB Show. The NAB Show is where equipment manufacturers showcase new technologies in the filmed entertainment and content delivery industries. It is the world’s largest video, audio and broadcast event serving the digital media and entertainment industries (NAB Show Facebook Page).

This year’s NAB Show will be from April 22-27, 2017 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
