Production Notes: Practical Lighting Technician

What Do Practical Lighting Technicians Do?

Also known as practical lighting operators or practical electricians, practical lighting technicians are responsible for ensuring that all practical lights that will be operated by actors are in working condition. Practical lights refer to light sources that are in the frame, such as table lamps, televisions, computers, street lamps, headlights from a car, and more.

Practical lighting technicians may be required to temporarily replace lighting fixtures to fit the period of the production and ensure that any modifications made to existing light fittings are changed back to their original state when the production is done filming at a location.

It is vital for practical lighting technicians to have a clear understanding of health and safety laws to protect cast and crew who need access to practical lights as well as maintain ongoing educational requirements for updated electrical codes and regulations. Before leaving the film location, practical lighting technicians must test the electricity power supply and provide the location’s owner with a test certificate that is designed to meet the current health and safety laws.
