What Does A Sound Mixer Do?

In film, the sound mixer, also known as a sound recordist or production mixer, is responsible for all of the sound recording on location or in a studio and is considered the head of the sound department. The sound mixer is in charge of hiring/supervising the boom operator and utility sound technician, setting up sound equipment and other recording media, and mixing audio signals in real time.

Sound mixers are vital members of the production team. They must ensure that the highest quality sound is captured during filming because fixing poor audio recordings in post-production can be a challenging task that takes away precious time and resources from other important duties. Poor sound quality in a final production piece can also be distracting and take away from actors’ performances and the film’s storytelling.

In addition to recording dialogue, sound mixers also record sound effects and atmosphere tracks that are used or referenced by foley artists and sound effect editors. They produce the final sound mix which includes speech, sound effects, music, narration, foley, and re-recorded dialogue.

Another important responsibility that belongs to sound mixers is setting up communication systems between crew members through microwave, satellite, or landline links.
