Production Notes: Splinter Unit

What Does Splinter Unit Mean?

A splinter unit is a small part of the main filming unit that branches off to get alternate shots. While second units are usually shooting additional footage at other locations, splinter units can be at the same location as the first unit, capturing different types of shots and angles.

Splinter units and second units are both important components of large productions. Their work ensures that a production stays on time and on budget by helping to get all of the shots required on the shot list. At times, they can even help a production come in under time and budget when they work simultaneously to capture all of the shots needed.
