What Is A Teleprompter?

A teleprompter is a type of display device that prompts the person speaking with the lines of text they need to read aloud. In a typical setup, the text is displayed on a monitor that is mounted facing a piece of reflective glass or beam splitter. The glass is invisible on one side to allow a camera to shoot through it while the other side is reflective so that the person can see and read the script. The reflection of the text is flipped twice so that it is displayed the correct way for the person to read.

Teleprompters are commonly used by television and news presenters as well as by public speakers for live broadcasts and other events where the speaker needs to appear to look directly at viewers. It is a great tool for speakers and presenters to use in place of index cards or cue cards if they have not memorized all of their lines or if they want to appear as if they are speaking spontaneously while making eye contact with their audience.

Teleprompters can be controlled by a teleprompter operator who not only sets up the equipment but also adjusts the speed of the script so that the presenter can easily read the text without having to run through their lines too quickly or too slowly. Some presenters can also control the speed of the teleprompter themselves via a foot pedal or wireless remote.
