Production Notes: Web Design

Web design can be used in a variety of different ways when it comes to the television and film industry. Below are just a few examples.

Marketing and Promotion

Websites can be created for individual productions to feature character profiles, cast and crew bios, behind-the-scenes photos and videos, awards and accolades, official movie trailers, and verified social media profiles. In addition, press releases, movie premieres, show times, interviews, parties, and other events featuring members of the cast and production team can be published on the website to keep fans in-the-know. These websites can also offer free downloads, such as ringtones, posters, icons, phone and desktop wallpapers, screensavers and more. Links to download apps, play games, enter sweepstakes, purchase soundtracks, and buy other exclusive promotional products are also commonly included on movie websites.

Major studios and networks with multiple television series, documentaries, short films, and feature films can also use a single website to promote all of their productions in one place and make it easy for their loyal viewers to find other movies or shows they might be interested in.

Creative Storyline Integration

In some television and film productions, fictional websites are used as part of the storyline. Sometimes, these websites are mocked up and not actually fully functional. Other times, a completely fully-functional website is built for the purpose of engaging fans to explore more of the storyline outside of the movie or TV show.

For example, the television series How I Met Your Mother was known for creating faux tie-in sites for an added level of interaction for viewers to experience (see all websites from How I Met Your Mother that actually exist).

Secure Investors

Filmmakers looking for investors can use websites to make their business plan, script, budget, credits, demo reels, promotional trailer or teaser, and other marketing materials / production-related mockups (such as set blueprints and costume designs) easily accessible from one central and secure location. Using a website to host investor-related materials also makes it easy for filmmakers to streamline the process of keeping investors informed with progress updates and new changes made to the business plan, script or budget throughout the course of the project.
