Dreamgirls is a 2006 romantic musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon. It is adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name by Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen. The film stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Jennifer Hudson, Anika Noni Rose, Keith Robinson, and Danny Glover.
The film is set in the early 1960s and 1970s and follows the rise of a Detroit, Michigan girl group consisting of Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose). Known as “The Dreamettes,” they are discovered at an R&B amateur talent show at the Detroit Theatre by Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), a car salesman who presents himself as the group’s new manager and soon starts his own record label out of his dealership.
Dreamgirls received a great number of awards and accolades, including three awards at the 64th Golden Globe Awards ceremony.
