Into the Wild is a 2007 biographical survival film written, co-produced, and directed by Sean Penn. The film is an adaptation of the nonfiction book of the same name written by Jon Krakauer.
Krakaeur’s book tells the story of Christopher Johnson McCandless, an American hiker who traveled across North America with minimal supplies, eventually arriving in Alaska in April 1992 after a 2-year trek. Although he hoped to live off the land, McCandless’s body was found by a hunter in September and his official cause of death was ruled to be starvation.
The film stars Emile Hirsch as McCandless and follows the Emory University graduate as he abandons his possessions, gives his entire savings ($24,000) to charity, and hitchhikes to Alaska. The film has received countless awards and accolades for Hirsch’s performance and Penn’s storytelling.
