Scene In Nevada: National Championship Air Races

Also known as Reno Air Races, the National Championship Air Races is a multi-day event that takes places every year in September at the Reno Stead Airport. The event has been organized by the Reno Air Racing Association, a 503(c) non-profit organization, since 1964. It attracts more than 150,000 aviators and aviation enthusiasts worldwide with its thrilling shows and races.

Air racing is “the world’s fastest motor sport” and Reno is just one of a few venues that continue to host the sport. Featuring multi-lap, multi-aircraft racing on 3-8 mile closed courses, the National Championship Air Races includes three days of qualifying rounds (Mon-Wed) followed by four days (Thu-Sun) of multi-aircraft heat racing. The event concludes with the Gold Championship races on Sunday afternoon.

Named America’s Best Air Show in 2017 by USA Today readers, the National Championship Air Races also features spectacular civilian and military aerobatics, military flight demonstrations between races, and a large civilian and military static aircraft display.
