The action drama Superman (1978) is about an alien orphan, Kal-El (played by Christopher Reeve), who is sent by his father, scientist Jor-El (played by Marlon Brando), on a spaceship from his dying planet Krypton to planet Earth where he is raised by a loving couple, Jonathan and Martha Kent.
Kal-El, who is named Clark Kent by his adoptive parents, discovers that he has superhuman powers and decides to use his powers for good. As Superman, he battles villain Lex Luthor (played by Gene Hackman), who comes up with an evil plan to trigger an earthquake and destroy the Hoover Dam.

Parts of the movie were shot at the Hoover Dam as well as nearby Lake Mead.
