The Pledge is a 2001 neo-noir mystery film directed by Sean Penn and featuring an ensemble cast starring Jack Nicholson, Aaron Eckhart, Helen Mirren, Robin Wright Penn, Vanessa Redgrave, Sam Shepard, Mickey Rourke, and Benicio del Toro. The film is based on the 1958 novella The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
Jack Nicholson plays Jerry Black, a Nevada homicide detective who, on the night of his retirement, pledges to find the killer of a murdered child.
