What Is A Dream Sequence?

A dream sequence is a storytelling technique used in film and television to take viewers on a slight detour from the main storyline. Dream sequences can be set in the past, future, or an alternate reality. They are typically denoted with audio or visual markers in the beginning of the dream sequence as well as at the end to help distinguish it from the main storyline.

One common method of creating the distinction that a dream sequence is about to begin is by showing a character falling asleep. However, some filmmakers may decide to skip the part where the character falls asleep and, instead, abruptly interrupt a dream sequence to show a character awakening to let the audience know that the preceding scene was just a dream.

Another well known, classic Hollywood filmmaking technique of distinguishing a dream or daydream sequence from the main storyline is the wavy dissolve effect in which one image transitions into another. Here is an example from Wayne’s World:

The wavy dissolve effect is also commonly accompanied by the following piece of harp music (parodied in the Wayne’s World clip above):

Dream sequences are a good way to explain things that would otherwise be difficult to integrate into the main storyline. They can illustrate what goes on in a character’s mind or explain how a character’s personality and behavioral traits developed through a particular experience from their past. They can also be used as a way to radically change the mood of the way a storyline is progressing to help transition the scenes that follow.
