What Is A Stinger?

On film sets, the common extension cord is referred to as a stinger. This is to help distinguish it further from the many other cables and cords used on a film set.

Stingers used on set are slightly more heavy duty than the standard extension cord one would use at home. The extension cords available at local hardware stores are typically rated for 15 amps but many of the lighting instruments used in film production require 20 amps. It is important to always use the appropriate power supply with each piece of equipment. Using a non-industry extension cord could result in it overheating and potentially starting an electrical fire.

“Fun” Theory: One idea on how the stinger got its name is that people realized if there was a malfunction with the extension cord, the electrical shock would sting. – Source
