Black Rock Desert is a region of the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area located in northwestern Nevada and northwestern Great Basin. It includes the Black Rock Desert Playa, which is an enormous lakebed that is a dry remnant of the ancient Lake Lahontan. The Playa is one of the most visited sections of Black Rock Desert. Its surface is so flat that it became the location used for setting two successful world land speed records. Black Rock has also become a popular venue for launching rockets as well as hosting the annual Burning Man Festival.
Extending more than 314,000 acres, Black Rock Desert is the largest wilderness area managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. The remains of several woolly mammoths and a saber tooth tiger have also been discovered here. Hot springs, volcanic lava beds, rugged mountains, and steep canyons in the area also offer even more interesting places to explore and use as a backdrop for filming.
If you are looking for one of the most unique places on Earth to film at, a remote area full of opportunities to shoot hiking, camping, off road driving, hunting scenes and more, be sure to visit Black Rock Desert and plan accordingly!
