Production Notes: Insurance

Production insurance is an important consideration for legal, contractual and asset protection. It is often required to obtain permits, film on private or public property, or rent equipment or vehicles.

Most locations where filming is going to take place will require some type of insurance, varying from general liability to workers compensation. Many types of insurance coverages can be purchased for just one day, a week, annually, or for the duration of a single project. Coverages can include general liability, third party property damage, rented and/or owned equipment, umbrella/excess liability, and workers compensation. Most locations will require that they be provided a Certificate of Insurance and named as additional insured.

Always check the insurance requirements before you commit to a location as $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 liability limits usually suffice, but can vary depending on the scope and complexity of the shoot. Certain locations, such as casinos, often require higher limits than what is considered standard.

Certain productions might require additional coverages, such as aerials, stunts, pyrotechnics, specialty driving, water, weapons or animals. Be sure to consult an insurance specialist regarding additional coverages.

Vendors renting equipment or vehicles to a production might also require proof of insurance and to be named as additional insured.

For production companies coming from another state to film in Nevada, the insurance broker must be licensed in the state you are domiciled or where you are filming. For those coming from another country, a local United States address is required due to the fact that if a claim occurs, it must be settled within the U.S.
