Jason Bourne is a 2016 action film starring Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander and Vincent Cassel. It was written by Paul Greengrass and Christopher Rouse and directed by Greengrass.
It is the fifth installment of the Bourne film series and a direct sequel to The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). Matt Damon reprises his role as the main character, former CIA assassin and psychogenic amnesiac Jason Bourne, following his absence in the previous installment The Bourne Legacy (2012).
Jason Bourne filmed in many parts of the world such as London, Berlin, Tenerife (the largest of the Canary Islands, off the coast of Morocco), Washington D.C. and Las Vegas. Though soundstage filming was also utilized, according to Jason Bourne producer Frank Marshall, “We film in real places that people want to see!”
In the film, Bourne remains on the run from CIA hit squads as he tries to uncover hidden truths about his father. CIA director Robert Dewey (Jones) orders the CIA head of cyber-security Heather Lee (Vikander) to hunt him down. The movie is an intense action flick that follows Jason Bourne all over the world, culminating in a thrilling sequence that takes place in Las Vegas, NV.
The Vegas scene follows Bourne as he comes into Las Vegas for EXOCON, the international convention catering to the hacker, surveillance and cyber security industries. The convention scenes were filmed at the Aria Hotel & Casino and largely used real crowds for authenticity.
As Jason Bourne begins pursuit of The Asset (Cassel), the chase spills out of the convention into the streets, and a car chase ensues. It wasn’t just any car chase though, this was a car chase down the Las Vegas Strip!

It was the first time ever that a film had shut down such a large part of the Strip, so Greengrass wanted to make this the biggest scene they had ever done for any of the Bourne films. He did not disappoint.
“The City was great and they really wanted it to happen. The Film Office and everybody got together and made it happen. Once we knew we had this iconic location, we knew we had to go big. ” – Matt Damon
The huge chase and action sequence involved somewhere around 200 vehicles. Car costs alone were close to half-a-million! There were 150 cars with extras and 50 cars with stunt drivers. Of the 200 cars, 170 of them ended up being destroyed.
One vehicle that did survive the melee was The Asset’s SWAT truck, which ended up rolling right through the Riviera Hotel & Casino. The iconic hotel & casino was already set to be imploded, so the production team got the chance to drive a SWAT truck right through the front door. Surprisingly, the custom-built SWAT truck made it through the scene okay.
