What Is A Storyboard?
A storyboard is a series of detailed illustrations based on a production’s script that is used during the planning phases of a film, television show, commercial, music video, or play.
Before a production begins filming, storyboard artists meet with directors to go over a production’s story and how the directors want to tell it, particularly through camera movement and angles. At times, this can mean that a storyboard artist must visit sets and filming locations with the director and key crew department heads to take notes on specific details that need to be included in the storyboard. Planning shots with storyboards can also help directors decide what elements of a filming location are actually necessary for each scene.
Storyboard illustrations are organized sequentially and help the entire production team get on the same page. Rather than having to interpret a director’s written or verbal instructions, the storyboard serves as a visual aid to demonstrate exactly what the director is envisioning and guide the team towards the same goal.
Storyboard artists are not just involved in the beginning stages of a production. During filming, storyboard artists revise, eliminate, and add new scenes as the project progresses.
Typically, storyboard artists do not storyboard an entire script. They work with the director to identify complex scenes that need to be clarified visually in terms of actor and camera movements, panning, zooming, lighting, depth of field, composition, and more.
