What Is An Outtake?

An outtake, also known as a blooper, is a scene that was recorded but not included in the final version of a production because it contains a mistake, such as flubbed lines, actors losing character, pranks played by cast or crew members, or issues with props. Outtakes are different from “deleted scenes” in that deleted scenes are often removed due to technical or storytelling issues with pacing, running time, or simply that they didn’t work as originally envisioned.

What Are Gag Reels?

A gag reel, also known as a blooper reel or outtake reel, is a collection of outtakes and bloopers made during production. They are commonly played at production wrap parties, and while many DVD releases often contain gag reels as an extra feature or Easter egg to let viewers in on the behind-the-scenes fun, some outtakes remain private inside jokes. Gag reels are also sometimes included at the end of a film or program during closing credits.

Are Bloopers Ever Staged?

In some cases, bloopers are staged, such as animated movies with bloopers. It takes a lot of effort to create animated scenes, so if you see bloopers at the end of an animated movie, they are typically created on purpose for laughs and entertainment. Pixar is a well known animation studio that likes to create simulated gag reels for fun.
