Trains operate over the scenic and historic Virginia & Truckee Railroad located in the high desert mountains near Lake Tahoe, Carson City, and Reno in or near the famous town of Virginia City, Nevada. Wide open, unspoiled and unique vistas showcase operating steam locomotives and heritage diesel powered locomotives. Engines pull ornate passenger coaches or 20th century freight cars over 13 miles of rugged, unspoiled high desert terrain. The route winds through several tunnels, over bridges and past mines and mine ruins centered about the active ghost town complete with three train depots, many historic buildings, including mansions, churches, saloons, shops, court house, among dirt roads and road crossings. Box cars, flat cars, tank cars and cabooses are available in an industrial setting. Wild roaming mustangs cross the undeveloped route daily. Qualified and friendly crews are available to operate equipment at reasonable rates.
