One-room schoolhouses were common in rural areas where populations are smaller, but the majority of them in the United States are no longer used as schools.
From 1922 to 1967, the Elgin Schoolhouse provided an education to children in grades 1 through 8. The school is located about 20 miles south of Caliente on State Route (SR) 317 in Lincoln County. A small apartment was also added to the building in 1922 to provide housing for teachers, which helped to ensure that there was no shortage of teachers while the school was open.
By its last year of operation in 1967, school buses had been transporting children to schools in Caliente and Panaca and the building was reverted to private ownership for a short while.
In 1998, the one-room schoolhouse in Elgin Siding was restored and later opened in July 2005 as a state historic site. It is now a part of the Nevada Division of State Parks system. The Elgin Schoolhouse State Historic Site features half of its original items while the rest of the items are still authentic to the time period.
