the D Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located at the heart of Downtown Las Vegas on the Fremont Street Experience. The property has been through a few different owners, names and design changes since 1980, first as Sundance Hotel (1980-1987) and then Fitzgeralds Hotel and Casino (1987-2012). It has only been known as the D Las Vegas since 2012.
In the fall of 2012, the D Las Vegas completed a $22 million renovation and rebranding to shed its former Fitzgeralds name and “luck of the Irish” theme of shamrocks and a leprechaun.
The remodel gave the property a more modern feel. While the D Las Vegas Casino Hotel stands for “downtown,” it also refers to owner Derek Stevens’ nickname, and Stevens’ hometown of Detroit.
The property offers 629 deluxe rooms, 22 contemporary suites, an outdoor pool, a newly renovated convention area with 11,000 square feet of modern meeting space, and a 2,565 square foot state-of-the-art showroom and theater.
the D’s gaming floor consists of 35,534 square feet and offers both new and vintage casino games. The second floor casino has a “Vintage Vegas” theme featuring one of the only operational Sigma Derby games in Las Vegas.
Fun Fact: the D Las Vegas is the tallest building in downtown Las Vegas (second tallest inside the city limits), and it also has the longest bar in Las Vegas at just under 100 feet long, Longbar at the D (source).
There is also a lively restaurant and bar scene including D Bar – a permanent outdoor bar on Fremont Street Experience featuring flair bartenders as well as dancing bartenders. The property’s Fremont Street façade was enhanced with the addition of an exterior escalator and interactive video exhibition created by former Cirque du Soleil producer Roger Parent, which together feature more than 40 giant flat-screen monitors combined with hundreds of feet of LED signage.
In 2013, the D expanded into hosting martial arts events as the venue hosted Lion Fight 11, a Muay Thai Tournament. The main event featured a match between Tetsuya Yamato, former WBC Muay Thai Japan Champion, and Kevin Ross, an American Muay Thai boxer. In addition, Lion Fight 11 was featured on AXS TV, a company founded by Mark Cuban.
Also in 2013, the D became the first casino in the world to accept bitcoin for hotel rooms, restaurants, and gift shop items. Additionally, a bitcoin ATM was installed next to the gaming floor where customers can buy and sell bitcoin instantly for cash.
