What Is Adaptive Music?
Adaptive music has its origin in video game production. Game composers who create music for video games play a big role in helping to keep players engaged, just as film composers help keep audience members interested in the action playing onscreen. However, while film composers have a fixed storyline and sequence of events to use as reference for the way they use music to enhance the film’s storytelling, video games are not as fixed as they include a variety of scenarios that some players may or may not experience and different paths for players to take. Therefore, game composers must employ a unique technique of creating an adaptive soundtrack for games – music that responds to and is directly influenced by the player’s decisions, otherwise known as adaptive music.
The goal of adaptive music is to enhance each person’s unique experience with an accompanying custom-tailored soundtrack. Here’s a short informational piece with several examples of music made for video games versus music made for films:

In film and television production, the concept of interactive movies and TV episodes where viewers get to “choose their own adventure” isn’t new, but it has been explored further in recent years by Netflix, Fox, and other studios (learn more).
As this type of format continues to grow, the need for more composers who are experienced in creating adaptive music will become more apparent and help create a uniquely immersive experience for viewers who want to become involved in the progression of a film’s story.
