What Is An Apple Box?

An apple box is a wooden box or crate closed on all six sides. They can include handle cut-outs for easy carrying and were originally used for storage but their versatility has expanded their uses around a film set.

Some of the most common uses of apple boxes are to elevate a person, camera or prop, provide seating, offer additional support and leveling for equipment, and protect electrical cables from a damp or wet ground. They can also be used as a step ladder or even used to make a dolly.

Apple boxes used to only be available in the following four standard sizes:

• Full Apple – 20″ x 12″ x 8″
• Half Apple – 20″ x 12″ x 4″
• Quarter Apple – 20″ x 12″ x 2″
• Pancake – 20″ x 12″ x 1″

Now, additional “mini” apple boxes are also available:

• Mini Apple – 10″ x 12″ x 8″
• Mini Half – 10″ x 12″ x 4″
• Mini Quarter – 10″ x 12″ x 2″
• Mini Pancake/Eighth – 10″ x 12″ x 1″

Apple boxes can be positioned in a few different ways, so some creative terminology was created to help crew members understand which way to position the apple box.

The following terms usually apply to the full apple size:

• New York – The apple box is positioned so that it is the tallest, 20″ high (like the tall buildings in New York)
• Texas/Chicago – The apple box is positioned so that it is resting on its longest narrow side, 12″ high
• LA – The apple box is positioned so that it is the flattest, 8″ high
