What Is A Cheeseplate?

A cheeseplate is a type of utility bracket used for creating camera rigs. It refers to a metal plate with a series of holes and grooves designed to expand mounting options for camera accessories.

Cheeseplates are machined from a single piece of aluminum alloy that offers the strength and rigidity needed to set up a secure rig. They are usually silver or black, which helps to reduce the reflections towards the lens.

Cheeseplates come in a variety of shapes and sizes (L-plates, round, square, and rectangular). Their threaded holes – typically 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 holes – make it convenient for screw-based devices to easily be attached. Some cheeseplates even come with countersunk holes for clean mounting.

Cheeseplates can be mounted vertically to offer better support for external recorders or they can be mounted horizontally, which is better for heavy batteries. Some examples of the many types of camera accessories that can be added to a cheeseplate include:

  • Articulating arms
  • Rods
  • Battery plates
  • Shoe mounts
  • Wireless microphones
  • Monitors
