Grips, Production Notes: Rigging and Fall Protection

What Are Grips?

In the film industry, grips are rigging technicians who help set up equipment that allow cameras to capture the shots needed through the use of dollies, cranes and other camera setups. In the United States and Canada, grips also help set up lighting instruments while in Europe, grips only handle camera equipment.

Why Is Fall Protection Important In the Film Industry?

Fall protection is when equipment and processes are set up to protect and prevent people and other overhead objects from falling, or to help prevent serious injuries in case a fall does occur and needs to be stopped. Fall protection is extremely important in the film industry to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all cast and crew members on set.

Grips are responsible for implementing safety measures on set “as it relates to the force of gravity,” particularly with tools, lighting and other overhead rigs that need to be secured to prevent falling on others. They also need to secure any temporary structures that are built to capture shots that other crew members need to walk on, around or use.

In Nevada, we have several companies with decades of experience providing grip and lighting technicians as well as rentals for fall restraint and fall protection safety equipment such as harnesses, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines and other fall protection systems. They have provided their services for such productions as Mall Cop: Blart 2, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Con Air, UFC events, Nascar, Red Bull Air Race events, and more.
