What Is Voice-Over?
Voice-over is a technique in which a piece of narrative or dialogue is spoken by someone offscreen and used in productions such as films, radio, TV shows, commercials, documentaries, and more. The voice-over could be the voice of someone in the production or it could be a special voice actor.
In animated movies and TV shows, voice-over technique is used to give voices to characters, and in other productions, voice-over can be a narrative tool to tell stories and explain relationships to help the audience understand a scene.
Game shows and live sports broadcasts are other common places where voice-overs are used to provide commentary as well as introduce players and prizes. Voice-over talent can also provide translations of speech into many other languages, and in these instances, voice artists do try to keep as much of the original speaker’s intonation as possible to preserve the emotional intent of the speech.
