Fallout: New Vegas is an action RPG (Role-Playing Game) and the fourth major installment of the Fallout video game series. It was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Bethesda Softworks in 2010. The story takes place in the year 2281 in a post-apocalyptic / retro-futuristic Las Vegas, following the devastation caused by a nuclear war between the United States and China over natural resources.

One of the original ideas for the fourth installment of Fallout was for New Reno (which was a prominent location in Fallout 2), but the idea quickly evolved into Fallout: Sin City, then Fallout: Vegas. Finally, it became Fallout: New Vegas, which is now known as Obsidian’s most famous game.

Lead designer Josh Sawyer rode his motorcycle around the Mojave Desert and Red Rock to get a feel for the areas surrounding Las Vegas. Sawyer visited many of Nevada’s oldest towns, such as Goodsprings and Eldorado Dry Lake Bed, and ended up including them in the game. Taking numerous reference photos and using satellite data available online, the design team was able to create an open world environment to scale with a few modifications to things like the Colorado River and Lake Mead so that they weren’t just tiny bodies of water that players could easily hop over (source).

The time period for Fallout: New Vegas followed the ’50s from Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, with the cutoff being JFK’s assassination (November 1963). The gangs included in Fallout: New Vegas represented the mobsters that influenced Las Vegas in the 1950s and ’60s, and while gambling didn’t play a significant role in the game, it was still accounted for in order to meet players’ expectations.

Fallout: New Vegas was designed, developed, and delivered in 18 months time. Although initial feedback offered criticism around the game’s technical issues, Fallout: New Vegas still received solid reviews and a loyal fanbase that continues to create and release mods for the game, keeping it fresh and interesting. As of February 2017, there were nearly 18,000 mods ranging from texture packs to new characters, added quests, and more.

Fallout: New Vegas is so popular that there is currently a Fallout 4: New Vegas mod in the development stages to bring New Vegas to Fallout 4. They are currently hoping for an early 2018 release.
