Filmed in Sandy Valley and at the dry lake bed near Jean, NV, Kelsea Ballerini’s music video for “Peter Pan” tells the story of a young couple’s breakup due to an emotional incompatibility with each other.
“I loved the idea of having a song about a breakup that wasn’t some dramatic cheating or scandal moment. It’s the kind of thing where one person just can’t emotionally match the other, and that’s a sad kind of ending and heartbreak… and that’s what I wanted this song and the video to capture,” Ballerini explains on her website. “Sometimes the thrills of life or youth overrule the thrill of love until someone is truly ready to be in a relationship. This was a fun way to show that side in the video.”

With the help of fashion designers Cavanagh Baker and Carol Hannah, the custom pieces Ballerini wore worked well in complementing the drama of the song with equally dramatic styling. Ballerini’s stylist Krista Roser told PeopleStyle that filming in the vast open desert of Nevada inspired Roser to use colors that not only matched the song’s mood but also stood out against the sand. While the straps in Ballerini’s outfits were used as a symbol of feeling tied down, the long flowing design elements were used as symbols of freedom as Ballerini walks away from the relationship (source).
Director Kristin Barlowe was also able to use natural elements from the dry lake bed to create a sensational wind-swept effect with Ballerini’s dress in the video (source).
Adding to the visual drama of the music video were aerial stunts performed by the aviation stunt team of Sky Combat Ace (Henderson / Las Vegas), a parachute, a speeding motorcycle, and a race on the dry lake bed between an antique car and a small plane.
The music video was recently nominated for Video of the Year at the Academy of Country Music Awards.
