Home to one of the most mysterious and top secret government facilities in the world (Area 51), Nevada’s reputation for the unknown is paramount and makes it one of the most popular settings for extraterrestrial and sci-fi based films. A place where UFO sightings continue to be commonplace even today is along the lonely 98-mile stretch of road known as Nevada State Route 375.
Officially designated “Extraterrestrial Highway” in 1996 by Nevada’s governor at the time, Bob Miller, the remote road borders the Nevada Test Site and Area 51 where a history of nuclear testing and tales of alien sightings and encounters have made the rural area a tourist attraction.
In conjunction with the release of the movie Independence Day, a public dedication ceremony was held in Rachel, NV with Twentieth Century Fox studio executives and Independence Day stars Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner in attendance.
Located near the center of the highway, the small town of Rachel (and the only town located on the Extraterrestrial Highway) caters to tourists and adventure-seekers. Dubbed the “UFO Capital of the World,” people from all over the world visit the friendly town and its famous Little A’Le’Inn Restaurant, Bar and Motel (also a film-friendly location).
If you are looking for a quiet and isolated road to take an otherwordly adventure on, the Extraterrestrial Highway is the road to travel. If you plan on filming your next production here, be sure to contact the Nevada Department of Transportation for requirements and permit information.
