What Is A Film Sculptor?

A sculptor is an artist who designs and creates three-dimensional objects from materials such as clay, wood, glass, plastic, stone, ice, metal, foam, and more. In film, sculptors work within the art department and can create special structures and props using techniques like sculpting, cutting/sawing, chiseling, carving, molding, casting, and welding.

Sculptors work closely with production designers, visual effects directors, and prop masters, depending on where they are needed. They are skilled at constructing both large and miniature objects for elaborate set designs as well as crafting life-like figures and replicating landmarks. Sculptors can also produce natural-looking rock formations, water features, and other elements of natural outdoor landscape and scenery.

Check out some of sculpture artist Valter Casotto’s prosthetic work below as an example of some of the incredible work that film sculptors do.
