What Does A Script Supervisor Do?

Also known as a continuity supervisor, a script supervisor oversees the continuity of a film by diligently observing and recording notes regarding hair, makeup, props, costume and wardrobe, set dressing, camera settings, audio quality, lighting setup, action sequences, facial expressions, dialogue and much more.

While a script supervisor does not necessarily have to memorize a film’s script, they are responsible for knowing the script well enough to recognize issues in continuity and making sure that they are corrected. It is often said that a good script supervisor will save the production time and money by catching continuity issues early on in the pre-production phase and providing breakdowns that are useful for shot scheduling and script timing.

Script supervisors must accurately note how actors move and interact with each other as well as props to ensure that follow-up scenes or scenes shot of the same sequence but from different angles are set up to flow seamlessly. For example, if a character is drinking from a glass of water using his left hand, the script supervisor is responsible for making sure that the same hand is used to hold the glass of water during each take.

Script supervisors also help actors perform their lines by providing forgotten dialogue quickly and cuing actors when necessary. They must also present accurate information on the clapperboard in order to synchronize picture and sound during the editing process.

Overall, script supervisors must be extremely detail oriented, organized, and an excellent communicator. Their role on set helps ensure that filming is efficient and that notes from the directors and editors are well documented and adhered to.
