Production Notes: Title Sequences

Motion graphic design uses animation techniques to create visual effects based on graphic design principles.

One common example of how motion graphic design is used in the film, news, and television industry are the opening credits and title sequences, which is typically done through kinetic typography (moving text). The way the typography is represented helps to establish the tone of the program.

For example, one of the earliest examples of kinetic typography used in a movie title sequence is Alfred Hitchcock’s Pyscho (1960). Designed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker and American graphic designer Saul Bass, its anxiety-inducing effects match the music and the theme of the film. Watch the opening sequence below:

Gaspar Noé is another Argentinian film director and screenwriter who is known for his extreme and aggressive title sequences, even warranting a health warning before watching them. For his film Enter the Void, Noé hired title designer Tom Kan to create an eclectic sequence filled with pulsating and flashy typography set to techno music. It ended up being the inspiration behind Kanye West’s “All Of The Lights” music video, which also came with its own warning at the beginning of the video. You can watch Enter the Void‘s title sequence on YouTube, but be warned that it is not recommended for photosensitive viewers or viewers prone to nausea or epilepsy.
