What Is A Whip Pan?

A whip pan, also known as a swish pan or whip shot, is a type of pan shot in which the camera moves so rapidly from left to right or right to left (x-axis) that it creates a blur effect.

Whip pans are a great tool for creating a variety of visual effects. Designed to be abrupt, it is commonly used to transition between shots and creatively hide edits, as well as create the illusion of a fast moving object. At times, the whip pan can be accompanied by a “whoosh” sound effect to imply the speed of the moving object.

Other common uses of the whip pan include:

  • Showing viewers what a character sees or where they are headed
  • Resetting the viewers’ orientation and taking them to a completely different time, physical location or imaginative space
  • Helping viewers draw connections between two shots, indicating how one action leads to the outcome
  • Amplifying the energy of a scene
  • And more
