What Does A Unit Stills Photographer Do?

A unit stills photographer, also known as a stills or still photographer, is responsible for taking photographs of sets during shoots. They are also responsible for creating photo props, such as driver’s licenses, passports, family portraits, mugshots, and any other images needed for shooting a scene.

A still photographer’s work helps to create a record of actors’ appearances (hair, makeup, wardrobe, etc.), background, and other set details for maintaining continuity. Their stills are also used by ad and public relations agencies for creating promotional marketing materials.

Still photographers are not only skilled at framing shots and capturing memorable moments, but they are also skilled at being invisible on set so as not to distract actors or accidentally end up on camera or the dialogue track.

Because they are often positioned close to camera crew and boom operators, still photographers need to remain as quiet as possible. One way they can mask the sound of their shutter clicks is by using a sound blimp, which is a sound-absorbing case, to house their camera.

In Nevada, we have still photographers who specialize in production stills as well as promotional photography, photojournalism, behind-the-scenes stills, animal photography, and more.
