Located in the basement of The Mob Museum in Las Vegas, NV is an immersive Prohibition history exhibit that features a working distillery and a speakeasy with a private VIP room. The Underground at the Mob Museum tells the stories of bootleggers, rumrunners, and those who tried to shut them down during a time when alcohol was prohibited.

Leading up to The Underground is the Alleyway, an immersive and experiential gallery that illustrates the story of the Lizzie D, a tugboat that was secretly used to transport illegal liquor during Prohibition. Situated in the Alleyway is a 300-gallon aquarium, produced in conjunction with The Animal Planet series Tanked, which recreates the ocean floor where wreckage of the Lizzie D and the hundreds of bottles of liquor it was transporting were found in 1977.

The distillery’s exhibits include artifacts such as a five-gallon still used to produce moonshine and a doctor’s prescription for alcohol as a “treatment” for headaches, nausea, diabetes, and other ailments. The main exhibit is a working still producing moonshine with samples available.

The speakeasy is a fun, blast-from-the-past exhibit built around a bar that serves house-brewed beer on tap and a stage for evening entertainment. Videos and artifacts tell the stories of the Roaring Twenties, which saw the rise of flappers, jazz, and the Mob, and even the menu is full of authentic, Prohibition-era craft cocktails. Behind a concealed door is “The Fitting Room,” an ultra-private speakeasy-within-a-speakeasy.
