What Is An ADR Recordist?

An automated dialogue replacement (ADR) recordist is a recording engineer who works with voiceover talent and actors who need to record or re-record dialogue for film, television, video games, and other productions.

ADR recordists are extremely knowledgeable in how acoustics work, which is an essential skill to have when it comes to matching sound to picture. They are able to coach talent in the right tones, pitches, and more as well as identify the best microphones to use, where to place them, and how to simulate an on-location acoustic environment in a sound studio.

ADR recordists also work with talent for voice-over narrating, foreign language dubbing, and making background murmur.
