Texaco Star Theater starring Milton Berle was so popular that restaurants would close their doors the night it aired, and water usage would even drop during the show’s hour as people watched the program.

Another variety show from the 1970s that became a huge success is Saturday Night Live. The sketch comedy show helped launch the film and television careers of many of its comedians.
