Production Notes: Specialty and Variety Acts

Variety entertainment is known as entertainment made by performers with special talents and skills. This includes acts such as musical performances, ventriloquism, comedy, magic, acrobatics, martial arts, impersonations, juggling, contortion, and so much more. It even includes animal talent shows.

In the late 1940s, variety shows became one of the most popular types of television shows in American history. Texaco Star Theater starring Milton Berle was so popular that restaurants would close their doors the night it aired, and water usage would even drop during the show’s hour as people watched the program.

Whether for a small cameo or for a major acting role, variety artists with specific skills are often sought out by the film and television industry, which can lead to more opportunities to work on other productions. Another variety show from the 1970s that became a huge success is Saturday Night Live. The sketch comedy show helped launch the film and television careers of many of its comedians.
